The Slavic Department and the Program in Russian, Eastern European and Eurasian Studies express solidarity with Ukraine

Feb. 28, 2022

In 1908, in response to the senseless slaughter of peasants by tsarist authorities, Leo Tolstoy wrote “I cannot be silent!” We cannot stay silent now. The war in Ukraine is an assault against the human values of justice and freedom. This is a war against the historic friendship and shared cultural legacy of the Ukrainian and Russian peoples. The Program in Russian East European and Eurasian Studies and the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures grieve the deaths of innocent people, and express solidarity with Ukraine. We stand with everyone who opposes this senseless and inhuman act of violence that may lead the world into an abyss. Tolstoy's words “THIS IS AWFUL!” resonate in our hearts.
