Writing at the end of the 1920’s, the literary critic Viktor Shklovsky argued that depicting the
Revolution by means of an intergenerational conflict had by then become a cliché of Soviet cinema.
On one side stood the older generation, still clinging to the pre-revolutionary values and ways of
life, on the other stood the youngsters, tasked with doing away with the old and ushering in the new.
More in general, even past this initial stage of Soviet cinema, the juxtaposition of different
generations is a topic which has not ceased to appeal to movie directors operating in the Soviet
Union and, later, in Russia, and has been employed widely in a variety of productions.
This movie series wishes to investigate the changing meanings that this at times extremely difficult
relationship has been endowed with through the years, from the 1920’s to the 2000’s. The movies,
which will be shown in Russian with English subtitles, will explore a variety of different cinematic
genres (comedies, drama, etc).
