St. Petersburg's metro is the most reliable city transport (particularly convenient for long-distance journeys). Normally trains run every 2-3 minutes. Usually, the stations open at about 5:45 am and close between midnight and 0:30 am. The first metro line (from Avtovo to Ploschad Vosstania) was opened on November 15, 1955. Today there are four lines and 55 stations. It is the deepest subway in the world.
Along with metro, the city also has an extensive system of trams, buses, and trolleybuses. There are several taxi companies, too. The easiest way to get a cab is to call 089.
