The Deparment of Slavic Languages and Literatures and the Program in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies present: Ensemble Zingaresca: Wednesday, February 11 at 7:30pm in Whig Hall. The duo, featuring Oleg Timofeyev and Vadim Kolpakov, have been active since 2004. They work on a cross-over project between the classics of the Russian seven-string guitar and the live tradition of the Russian Roma (Gypsies). Oleg is a performer and scholar who spent many years of his life bringing back the all-but-forgotten Russian seven-string guitar tradition. Vadim was raised in the vibrant oral tradition of the Russian Gypsies, and learned a great deal from his uncle, the famous Russian-Gypsy guitarist Alexander Kolpakov. Zingaresca presents a colorful and sophisticated show, displaying the tight connection between the heritage of the Russian seven-string classics and the fiery, improvisatory music of the Russian Gypsies.
