History of Russian Literature before 1860

Description/Objectives:
A survey in English of major literary developments and texts in Russian culture up to the mid-19th century. After a brief introduction to Russian traditional texts (saints lives and folklore), the course concentrates on master prose writers of the Romantic and Realist periods: Pushkin, Gogol, Lermontov and the early Dostoevsky.

Reading/Writing Assignments: Weekly reading. Amount varies -- averages 160 pages per week.
Requirements/Grading:
Paper in lieu of Final Exam: 20%
Papers: 30%
Oral Presentation(s): 10%
Precept Participation: 40%
Prerequisites and Restrictions: Knowledge of Russian not required.
Other Information: Two 2-page written critiques Final paper (10-12 pages)
