Soliciting Letters of Recommendation

Any undergraduate or graduate student wishing a letter of recommendation from a faculty member in the Slavic Department is expected to open a dossier file with the department.  The applicant should:

  • First obtain the consent of the letter-writer;
  • Then provide the letter-writer with a list of deadlines, addresses, and the necessary signed forms (confidentiality waivers, etc);
  • File the following materials with Kate Fischer, the Departmental Manager, at least two weeks before any recommendation letters are to be dispatched.  
  • If there are last-minute updates and new requests, first obtain permission of the faculty member and then submit the new material and additional deadline to Kate Fischer for inclusion in dossier file. 

For Undergraduate Students:

  1. Cover Letter for each position applied for.
  2. Up-to-date resume or c.v.
  3. Transcript of courses taken and grades received (unofficial is fine).       
  4. Personal Statement describing the funding project, position being applied for, etc.
  5. Deadlines for these letters to be received (in chronological list).
  6. Relevant writing sample up to 10 pages (best undergraduate work, section of JP or senior thesis, etc.).

 

For Graduate Students: 

  1. Cover Letter for each position applied for.
  2. Transcript.
  3. C.V.
  4. Description of job posting or funding source for post-doc.
  5. Writing sample: best chapter from dissertation or abstract; hard copy of, or on-line reference to, all publications; material in press or accepted to be included at the applicant’s discretion.
  6. Deadlines for these letters to be received (in chronological list).
